Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition where a man’s prostate gland enlarges, typically starting after age 40. The prostate, which
surrounds the urethra, secretes fluid to nourish sperm. As it enlarges, it can press on the urethra, leading to urination issues. BPH is especially prevalent in men over 60.
The prostate grows due to an increase in the number of cells (hyperplasia), but the exact cause is unknown. Factors may include male hormones (androgens), estrogens, and growth factors. As the prostate enlarges, it can cause urinary tract blockages, leading to complications like urinary infections and kidney damage.
Many men may not experience symptoms, but those who do should seek medical attention.
